What is a CPAP Machine?
If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, your specialist will most likely talk to you about a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. A CPAP machine is a common way to manage obstructive sleep apnea. This machine uses a mask that goes on your face while you sleep to help keep your airway open. The goal is to reduce the number of respiratory events you have while you sleep.
How Does it Work?
So, how exactly does a CPAP work?
Air is blown from an air compressor into the throat through a hose. The pressure of the air slowly increases constantly throughout the night. This prevents the airway from closing, which allows you to breathe better while you sleep. A mask is worn creating a seal to make sure the pressure stays the same.
Is a CPAP Right for Me?
At PRECiDENT, we usually recommend patients consider surgery to solve their sleep apnea for good. Surgery allows us to get to the root of your sleep apnea and fix it permanently.
However, we recognize not everyone is ready to take that step. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but do not want to go through surgery, a CPAP machine is a good alternative. CPAP machines will help you breathe easier during the night, giving you the sleep you need and deserve.
Finding the Right Mask.
Every patient has unique needs and comfort levels. Luckily, there are a few different mask options available. You will need to talk with your specialist about which mask will work the best for you.
The nasal mask covers your entire nose, resting on the bridge. A nasal mask is a good option you
- Need higher air pressure
- Want natural airflow
- Move while you sleep.
The nasal pillow mask is a lighter and often more comfortable version of the regular nasal mask. The nasal pillow sits at the base of the nostril, forming a seal for the pressurized air. The air then flows directly into the nose. They work best for patients who require lower air pressure. Because they are not as big as the nasal or whole face mask, the nasal pillow is often great if you are claustrophobic.
The full face mask is probably the most well-known CPAP mask. Covering your mouth and nose, this mask is perfect if you breathe through your mouth. This is another great option if you need a higher dose of air pressure.
